Volunteers will assist with monthly programs for families of children associated with Operation Shoestring. Volunteers will greet families, provide and serve dinner, and engage the children of these families while parents/guardians attend three educational sessions. Volunteers will assist with developing activities for children that address identifying and challenging unhealthy eating habits and increasing knowledge to help families lead healthy lives.

Specific Job Responsibilities of Placement:

In partnership with Operation Shoestring, volunteers will assist with approximately five evening programs throughout the school year (September – May) for families of Operation Shoestring participants. Volunteers will greet families, provide and serve dinner, and engage the children of these families while parents attend educational sessions. The project focuses on literacy and academic growth. Some volunteers will provide an educational program for parents while other volunteers will provide activities for children.

This project occurs year-round in the evenings, with approximately five evening programs throughout the school year at Operation Shoestring, located at 1711 Bailey Avenue, Jackson, MS. Exact dates and times will be coordinated by the project Chair and Co-Chair and Operation Shoestring staff.

As a volunteer on the Brick by Brick Project, you must meet the following requirements to complete your project placement and receive project credit for the year. If you have any questions or cannot meet the requirements as described, please contact the Placement Chair at placement@jljackson.org for further direction.

  4. Participate in and attend shifts as specified by the project chair.
  5. Complete all community partner volunteer requirements.

Important Information:

This project will meet approximately five times throughout the school year in the evenings at Operation Shoestring, 1711 Bailey Avenue, Jackson, MS, 39203. 

This is a great placement for those who work during the day.
