I Read More with My Buddy

I Read More With My Buddy aims to improve the fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension of second and third-grade students by conducting one‐on-one reading sessions at McWillie Elementary School. This weekly interaction between the volunteer and the student is what makes this program successful. Reading aloud provides the student with a positive role model, offers new information, introduces rich vocabulary, presents a wider variety of books, and reinforces good grammar.

JPS Partners in Education & McWillie Elementary School

Specific Job Responsibilities of Placement:
In partnership with JPS Partners in Education, volunteers will conduct one-on-one reading sessions with 2nd and 3rd grade students selected by their teachers at McWillie Elementary School to help students build fluency and comprehension skills throughout the school year. Volunteers also will coordinate a book drive to collect reading materials to give back to the school.

Insights and experience members will gain:
A desire to work and interact with children is necessary.

This placement is a great choice for those who work part-time, have a flexible work schedule, or who are stay-at-home moms with children in school or preschool. It is a very rewarding project with a first-hand opportunity to see a positive impact made.

Committee Meeting Details:
As a volunteer on the I Read More With My Buddy project, you must meet the following requirements to complete your project placement and receive project credit for the year. If you have any questions or cannot meet the requirements as described, please contact the Placement Chair at placement@jljackson.org for further direction.

Note: The following list is an outline of the project requirements. As needs arise, this list may be modified or expounded upon in order to properly complete the project for the Community Partner.

  1. Attend project orientation.*
  2. Attend cultural competency training.*
  3. Complete your online project evaluation and online placement evaluation upon project conclusion.*
  4. Conduct one-on-one reading sessions one (1) morning or afternoon per week during the fall and/or spring semester(s) with second or third-grade students at the designated JPS elementary school, McWillie Elementary School (dates TBA).
  5. Plan and participate in other enrichment activities in conjunction with the designated JPS elementary school (dates TBA).
  6. Complete all JPS requirements, including but not limited to volunteer applications, orientations, background checks and fingerprinting.

Orientation or Training Details:
  • Attend project orientation. (date, time, and location TBA)
  • Attend cultural competency training.
  • Complete your online project evaluation and online placement evaluation upon project conclusion.
  • Complete all JPS volunteer requirements including (but not limited to): JPS volunteer orientation, background checks, and fingerprinting.

Important Information:
Jackson Public Schools require each volunteer to complete a background check, JPS Volunteer Application, and submit their fingerprints.

JPS Partners in Education conducts a mandatory summer training session held at the designated school in August (date TBA).

Currently, the project takes place on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:00 am – 11:00 am at McWillie Elementary School (while this schedule may change depending on the school’s need, volunteers should choose the day that works for them).
