Read to Succeed is a five-day summer camp that aims to improve the fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension of third grade students from JPS schools who have failed their 3rd grade reading gate test. The camp will provide a memorable, interactive, and educational summer experience that will foster the development of reading skills. Anticipated camp dates are June 8 – 12, 2026.

Specific Job Responsibilities of Placement:
Camp week is anticipated to be held June 8 – 12, 2026. There will also be flexible volunteer hours leading up to the week of camp, such as planning the camp curriculum and purchasing supplies prior to the start of the camp. Volunteers will provide breakfast and lunch during the week of the camp and will assist in one-on-one tutoring of campers.

Insights and experience members will gains:
A desire to work and interact with children is necessary.

Committee Meeting Details:
As a volunteer for the Read to Succeed project, you must meet the following requirements to complete your project placement and receive project credit for the year. If you have any questions or cannot meet the requirements as described, please contact the Placement Chair at placement@jljackson.org for further direction.

Note: The following list is an outline of the project requirements. As needs arise, this list may be modified or expounded upon in order to properly complete the project for the Community Partner.

  1. Attend project orientation.*
  2. Attend cultural competency training.*
  3. Complete your online project evaluation and online placement evaluation upon project conclusion.*
  4. Volunteers MUST attend each day of camp and remain at camp for the full-time commitment specified by the project chair.
  5. Participate in and attend planning meetings within your specified project area of camp (dates TBA)
  6. Organize and order supplies for your camp project area prior to camp week.
  7. Participate in and attend the camp’s showcase event (date TBA).

Orientation or Training Details:

  • Orientation and training sessions with MCM Programs staff will be held prior to the start of camp (date TBA but typically occurs in April or May).
  • As part of Mississippi Children’s Museum policy, background checks are required on all volunteers.
  • Volunteers are required to participate in a post-project evaluation and celebration on an evening in the fall (date TBA).

Important Information:
Read to Succeed will be held at the Mississippi Children’s Museum and LeFleur’s Bluff State Park.

This camp is a five-day camp. Volunteers MUST attend each day of camp and remain at camp for the full-time commitment specified by the project chair.

Volunteers are required to participate in a celebration at the end of the project/week (date TBA) and post-project evaluation
