Sensory Fun and Learning aims to increase the social development, interaction, and creativity of children attending The Little Light House. Volunteers will provide sensory activities for children with special needs, ages six weeks to six years of age. Volunteers will plan and organize activities that incorporate various learning experiences through sensory play.

Specific Job Responsibilities of Placement:
Sensory Fun and Learning volunteers will plan, organize, and conduct activities with special needs children at The Little Light House during school year evenings. Currently, this project occurs every other Tuesday evening from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm (this schedule may change depending on the needs of The Little Light House, but volunteers should choose the day that works for them). A desire to work and interact with children is necessary. The Little Light House requires each volunteer to complete a background check and attend orientation (date TBA in July or August).

Committee Meeting Details:
As a volunteer on the Sensory Fun and Learning project, you must meet the following requirements in order to complete your project placement and receive project credit for the year. If you have any questions or cannot meet the requirements as described, please contact the Placement Chair at placement@jljackson.org for further direction.

Note: The following list is an outline of the project requirements. As needs arise, this list may be modified or expounded upon in order to properly complete the project for the Community Partner.

  1. Attend project orientation.*
  2. Attend cultural competency training.*
  3. Complete your online project evaluation and online placement evaluation upon project conclusion.*
  4. This project requires sensitivity to working with special needs children who have been diagnosed with physical and/or mental disabilities.
  5. Participate in and attend two (2) evening project meetings each month with the students of the Little Lighthouse Preschool, on-site, located in Jackson (dates TBA).
  6. Coordinate and prepare activities for children who attend each meeting.
  7. The Little Light House requires each volunteer to complete a background check and attend orientation (date TBA).

Orientation or Training Details:
  • Project Orientation (date, time, and location TBA)
  • Complete the online Serv Safe Food Training session. This training lasts approximately one hour.

Important Information:
Project is held at the Little Light House, located in Christ United Methodist Church at 6000 Old Canton Road in Jackson, Mississippi.

This placement is a great choice for those members who work during the day.
