Volunteers will assist with monthly programs for families of children associated with Operation Shoestring. Volunteers will greet families, provide and serve dinner, and engage the children of these families while parents/guardians attend three educational sessions. Volunteers will assist with developing activities for children that address identifying and challenging unhealthy eating habits and increasing knowledge to help families lead healthy lives.

Specific Job Responsibilities of Placement:
This project occurs during school-year evenings, with approximately 8 programs to be held at Operation Shoestring, located at 1711 Bailey Avenue, Jackson, MS 39203, or at a nearby school, once a month, on Tuesday evenings from approximately 5:00 PM – 7:30 PM. Exact dates and times will be coordinated by the project Chair, project Co-Chair, and Operation Shoestring staff.

Insights and experience members will gain:
A desire to work and interact with children is necessary.

Committee Meeting Details:
As a volunteer for the Wholesome & Healthy project, you must meet the following requirements to complete your project placement and receive project credit for the year. If you have any questions or cannot meet the requirements as described, please contact the Placement Chair at placement@jljackson.org for further direction.

Note: The following list is an outline of the project requirements. As needs arise, this list may be modified or expounded upon in order to properly complete the project for the Community Partner.
  1. Attend project orientation.*
  2. Attend cultural competency training.*
  3. Complete your online project evaluation and online placement evaluation upon project conclusion.*
  4. Complete the online Serv Safe Food Training session. This training lasts approximately one hour.
  5. Complete Operation Shoestring volunteer requirements, including attending a one-hour volunteer orientation session and completing volunteer forms.
  6. Plan, provide and serve dinner to families and program attendees (dates TBA).
  7. Engage with and supervise children of family attendees while educational sessions are conducted (dates TBA).
  8. Coordinate and develop speakers/activities that identify unhealthy eating habits.
